If visions of sugar plum fairies, elegantly wrapped gifts and the aroma of a freshly chopped Christmas tree are what you're dreaming of, it may be time to get your mind on business in preparation for the holidays. This season is very busy for families and especially for home-based working moms. However, it need not be stressful. A few simple steps can make the holidays truly enjoyable and yet profitable for your business.
Plan your absence at the office. Being in charge is a good thing, but getting a backup in place is essential for any business. Delegate some of your responsibilities to other home-based working moms to manage business as usual in your absence. This will help diminish any risk and could also be an excellent opportunity for other home-based working moms to add to their skills.
Think through your holiday 'must do's.' The holidays can be hectic with all the shopping, gift-wrapping, holiday parties and other fun activities available. To be less stressed, plan out your work and play times to make sure you aren't overextending yourself. You may not be able to attend every function or host this year's event. Be realistic, and don't be afraid to say no. Sometimes the best holidays are the simplest ones. Maybe this is the year that you draw names with your extended family or with your co-workers when it comes to gift-giving. Take a hard look at all of the things coming up and make sure you choose those that are most important to you and your family. The others may lose out to a nice, quiet family night around the fireplace watching your favorite Christmas movie.

Communicate with your customers. Keep your customers informed so they know when you're not available during the holidays. Communicating with customers will help set their expectations about your business. Many will respect your decision to spend quality time with your family around the holidays. You may want to leave an emergency number with them. However, make certain they understand that it is to be used only during emergencies.
Market your business. Time off from business doesn't mean you can't market your company. Holidays and the accompanying parties are wonderful opportunities for business owners to network and show excitement about what you do. You may have the opportunity to meet potential clients who need exactly what your business offers. Networking with people while enjoying your holidays is an excellent way to mingle fun with work; you'll end up making friends as well as business clients. Take care not to market yourself excessively, though. No one wants to be "sold" something while enjoying a nice party.
Holidays are meant for enjoyment, and that's true for your customers, too. So in all the chaos of trying to balance work and family, don't forget to enjoy yourself. A happy you will surely translate to a happy family and a prosperous business.
